Wage Reporting and Overpayment Monitoring
Each year, about 1 million people receive an overpayment notice from the Social Security Administration (SSA) saying they received more then they should and it needs to be paid back. On average these overpayments amount to $9,282. Once an overpayment is identified, you must begin paying it back within 30 days.
The best way to prevent overpayments is to report your earnings to SSA by the 5th of each month and paying attention to e;arning restrictions such as Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA).

- Trial Work Period (TWP): For those receiving SSDI benefits, you can test your ability to go back to work by working as much as you can (and earning as much as you can) without jeopardizing your monetary benefits. The Trial Work Period lasts for 9 months (not necessarily consecutive) in a rolling 60-month period. Any month in 2024 in which your earnings exceed $1,110 will go towards your trial work period. - Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA): To be eligible for disability benefits, a person must be unable to engage in substantial gainful activity (SGA). The SGA amount for persons with disabilities other than blindness is $1,550 per month. For persons who are blind, the amount of earnings that indicate SGA is $2,590 per month. If you earn over SGA and have completed your TWP, your monthly montary benefits will stop. Learn More
- Impairment-Related Work Expenses (IRWE): IRWEs are costs for items or services that you need in order to work because of your disability. You can deduct the costs of an IRWE from your countable income when determining your eligibility for Social Security disability benefits. Lean More
